Sandalwood essential oil comes from the heartwood of the Sandalwood tree, Santalum album. The fragrance of this tree is well known through its usage in incense and aromatherapy. Santalum album is more commonly known as Indian Sandalwood, and is indigenous to Southern India. Like the rest of the Sandalwood genus it is a hemiparasitic tree and related to the European plant Mistletoe. The majority of cultivated Santalum album is grown in India where production is government controlled, though it is also grown on a wide scale in Kununurra in Western Australia. The highest quality trees, and thus wood and oils, are found in Karnataka (formerly Mysore) and Marayoor in Kerala, Southern India.

The tree itself is an evergreen which grows up to 9 meters in height, has a greyish brown trunk and leathery green leaves. It produces small pinkish-purple to red flowers in season.

Essential Oil Characteristics

The oil itself is extracted from chips of heartwood via steam distillation, it thick and viscous, pale yellow to gold in colour and clear in nature. It has a base note which is woody, persistent, lingering and exotic in character. The aroma of this oil develops more following application to the skin.


The principle constituents are sesquiterpenic alcohols, these form more than 90% of the oil, of this roughly 90% of the essential oil 50-60% is the tricyclic α-santalol with β-Santalol comprising 20-25%. The other useful constituents include pinene, santalic acid, terassantalic acid and santalone.
