Plant
The plant is a native of Asia, where it is widely grown still. The plant itself is reed-like and a perennial growing to around 1 meter in height, and has leafy stems. The clusters of flower buds which are white and pink, produce yellow flowers which cause it to be used in landscaping around many tropical homes.
Essential Oil Characteristics
The essential oil itself is gained from the root using steam distillation, and is a pale greeny-yellow colour which darkens with age, and is clear in nature with thin or watery viscosity. Constituents
The principle consituents that yield its useful properties are Gingerin, Gingenol, Gingerone and Zingiberine. Though a-pinene, camphene, b-pinene, 1,8-cineole, linalool, borneol, y-terpineol, nerol, neral and b-bisabolene are also found.
